Physical Demands

Expect great physical demands.  As the players’ ages increase and the competitive levels increase, the physical demands will rise.  You will be required to run short distances many times.  You will be constantly moving and on your feet.

Initial Training: Expect informative lectures, demonstration and exercises on the basic rules at local association meetings and camps.

Equipment Needs

Basketball

  1. Jacket – Black, all crew the same, if worn, recommended for wear prior to game
  2. Shirt – Standard black/white 1″ vertically stripped: 
    • 3″ side panel with American flag on the left sleeve starting at 2″ above cuff (up to 2″x 3″ flag can be sublimated or attached)
    • Short sleeves (approximately 8 inches in length with black cuffs)
    • “V” neck shirt shall be worn and an under garment (if worn) shall be black
    • Worn tucked inside pants
    • Entire crew shall wear same design and style
  3. Shoes – Entirely black with black laces
  4. Socks – Black
  5. Pants – Black, with no flares
  6. Belt – If worn, shall be black
  7. Whistle – Black lanyard, recommend black plastic – carry a spare

Football

  1. Shirt – Black and white vertically striped, long or short-sleeved official’s shirt shall be worn.  The shirts shall have 1 or 2-inch stripes, a black cuff and Byron Collar.  All officials, in a given game, are to wear the same type shirt.  Required flag placement shall be centered 1 inch above the pocket or placed on the upper left arm of the uniform with the stars facing in.
  2. Knickers – Standard, all white tapered knickers shall be worn with a short overlap below the knee (not more than 4 inches).
  3. Black Pants – hard finish pants may be worn in lieu of traditional white knickers.  Entire crew must be the same. (One inch single white stripe down the leg)
  4. Shorts – Black or white shorts may be worn during warm weather.  Entire crew must be the same.
  5. Socks – With knickers will be one-piece stockings with a modified northwestern stripe (1/2 inch white, 1/2 inch black, 1 inch white, 1/2 inch black, 1/2 in white) are required.  The width of the black showing below the knickers should be the same as the wide black band below the striping pattern.  Socks worn with black pants shall be black.
  6. Shoes – Black football shoes, with minimal white or silver trim/markings, and black laces are required. Shoes should be shined before each game.
  7. Cap – Black baseball-style cap with white piping is required.  For the purpose of identification, the referee shall wear a solid, white baseball-style cap.
  8. Belt – A black leather belt 1 1/4 to 2 inches wide with a plain buckle shall be worn.
  9. Jacket – A black and white vertically stripped jacket when worn during the game.
  10. The uniforms should fit properly and be clean and neat.  All officials must have the proper equipment; essentials are a whistle, penalty marker, white bean bag to mark non-penalty spots, game card, pencil and rubber bands or some device to keep track of the down number.  The penalty marker shall be a light gold flag (15 inches x 15 inches) with a middle pouch weighted with sand or beans, etc.  The linesman shall furnish a clipping device for use in measuring first downs.
